We have the power to make a dent.

As Eric Schmidt told the U.S. House Committee on Energy this April 2025: “Our nation stands at a pivotal moment.” The two “great imperatives” shaping our future—artificial intelligence and energy—are inseparable. And both, inescapably, are tied to climate. With AI’s energy demand projected to consume up to 99% of the world’s electricity, the stakes could not be higher.

Yet this is also our moment of agency. In a time where bold government action feels elusive, we—the technologists, designers, operators—can lead. Green IO is a call to reclaim that responsibility. As “citizens of change,” we have the tools, creativity, and resolve to embed sustainability into the DNA of the digital world. Just as Agile and DevOps reshaped our field, so too must Sustainable Software and GreenOps. Let’s optimize not only for performance, but for energy efficiency and carbon awareness.

I believe every talk, exchange, and connection at Green IO New York 2025 will equip us to return to our organizations with greater clarity, urgency, and actionable practices. Let’s learn—and act. Together, we’ll grow a community actively shaping a more just, efficient, and radically better digital future.
